Galligan, Michael

The passing of 61-year-old Michael 'Moocher' Galligan of River Street, Cavan caused great sadness among his many acquaintances at Cavan Gaels, Crosserlough and the Cavan team in New York. Michael was an outstanding underage player, winning three U14 Roinn A medals with De La Salle Boys School in 1962, '63 and '65 and minor championships in 1967 and '68 with Cavan Gaels. He played in the 1967 Cavan SFC final against Crosserlough, at the age of 17, who were in the process of winning seven-in-a-row. After his father moved his medical practice to Kilnaleck, Michael joined Crosserlough and won a SFC in 1971, playing against his former club. Michael represented Cavan at all levels before emigrating in 1971, winning two Fr Manning Cups (U16). He played extensively for the Cavan team in New York but he always stayed in touch with happenings back home. He returned to Ireland in 2001. Representatives from Cavan Gaels and Crosserlough provided a Guard of Honour at his funeral.
