In February, Swanlinbar GAA were shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of John McGovern, who was killed tragically in a car crash. John, who was known as 'Foggie' by his friends, had played football with Dernacrieve Gaels up to Under 16 and then took a break to concentrate on his studies in UCD and to farm. It is understood that he was planning on making a return to Swad football this year. John was also an accomplished performer on the button accordion, playing with the local Comhaltas and was a grand nephew of Andrew McGovern, the famous banjo player. His funeral took place at St Mary's Church in Swanlinbar.
