In January, Cavan Gaels lost one of its great ambassadors following the death of Cathal Young. Cathal was a real leader on the field for the club when it first formed in 1957 and played on the initial Gaels team to win a title; the league title in 1958. He captained the team when they regained the title again two years later but his proudest moment came in 1965 when the town club captured its first ever senior championship crown. He lined out in the Gaels' attack that day and when his playing days were over he stayed deeply involved in the association, serving as a member of the Civil Service GAA in Dublin.
Whilst in the capital, he still remained an avid support of the Gaels, as well as the Cavan team, making the trip up to Breffni Park for last year's county final victory over Kingscourt Stars despite battling illness. A smiling Cathal could be seen in the stand at Breffni as Eamon Reilly and Martin Dunne raised the Oliver Plunkett Cup aloft from the podium, 12 titles on from when he and his team mates helped the club to its first crown 49 years previous. A "unique and special man", according to his club, Cathal is survived by his wife Anne, his sons and daughters and extended family.
