Widespread sorrow was caused by the sudden death following a road traffic accident of 22-year-old Cavan hurler Patrick 'Paddy' Bannon from Derrylurgan, Ballyjamesduff on Sunday, January 29th, 2017. An apprentice aircraft maintenance engineer at Cityjet in Dublin, Paddy was a keen sportsman who represented Ballymachugh in hurling from underage level right through to senior. He won a senior championship with the club in 2011 and also starred on the Castlerahan / Lavey side that won the county minor title a year later. An excellent and dedicated hurler, he was a member of the Cavan senior hurling squad at the time of his death, having also represented Cavan at minor and U21 levels.
