Queen’s University, Belfast moved into the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup thanks to a 1-14 to 0-12 win over rivals Ulster University in Jordanstown last night.

A couple of two-point frees from Antrim attacker Ryan McQuillan helped the visitors to lead by 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time, with Ruairí McCullagh’s placed balls keeping UU in touch.

Charlie Diamond’s two-pointer early on in the resumption cut the deficit down to a point for the hosts prior to Conor O’Neill, Conall Higgins and Ronan Cassidy (free) all knocking over scores at the other end.

UU would get things level in the closing quarter and moved ahead through McCullagh’s sixth point of the game, but Queen’s answered back with the next three scores, including a two-point free from Anton Tohill and a 64th minute goal by Joey Clarke.

In Liam Mellows Park, holders DCU also advanced by scoring a 1-16 to 1-13 win against ATU Galway.

Seanan Carr and Ryan Roche traded first-half goals in this one and, while the Dublin students fell behind for the first time early in the second-half, Senan Baker’s two-pointer ushered them back in front.

After that, points by Darragh Swords, Conor Dolan and Baker (2) down the home stretch saw out the victory for DCU at the Galway ground.
