Last night’s Down All-County Football League Division 1 final boiled over in the second-half as both Burren and Kilcoo finished with 12 players each in Mayobridge.
Minus the services of injured ace attacker Donal O’Hare, Burren defeated the All-Ireland club senior champions on a 1-12 to 0-7 score-line as Shay McArdle’s goal on 45 minutes set them on the path to victory.
However, with 10 minutes to go, the game turned ugly as a mass brawl broke out between the teams and smaller brawls followed.
In the end, referee Conor Curran sent off six players as Kilcoo’s Jerome and Ryan Johnston both saw red after only coming off the bench along with team mate Sean Og McCusker, while Burren’s Odhran Murdock, Danny and Ryan Magill all saw red as well.
The suspensions from the league decider look set to carry into the county senior football championship, with Kilcoo opening their title defence against Clonduff next Friday night.
