Roscommon clinched their second Connacht U20 football championship title in three years with a 5-16 to 2-22 victory over Mayo after extra time yesterday evening.
Kobe McDonald’s goal had given the holders the perfect start at Tuam Stadium three minutes in and Tom Lydon’s goal 15 minutes later saw them up by 2-3 to 0-4.
Mayo stretched their lead to eight ahead of John Curran bagging their first goal and a free from Charlie O’Carroll would leave the scoreline reading 2-7 to 1-6 come the interval.
Roscommon sent over the first four points of the restart and hit the front through Ruairi Kilcline’s goal in the 46th minute before McDonald, who finished with 1-7, steered the Westerners back ahead with a superb score from beyond the arc.
John McGuinness’s goal put Roscommon back in the driving seat after that, and while late points from Lydon and Colm Lynch edged their neighbours ahead again, a late Keelan Kelly point would force extra time for Cian Smith’s lads.
The added periods saw goals from Kevin Hester and Kilcline proving huge for the Rossies, along with an Eoghan Carthy two-pointer and a brace from Dean Casey (one free) to capture the provincial crown.
