RTÉ’s National League highlights programme will continue to be called Allianz League Sunday.

This is despite renewed pressure on the GAA to end its 30-year partnership with the insurance giant amid claims that it benefited financially from Israeli forces being in Gaza by investing in organisations involved in the war.

Several counties passed motions before Christmas calling on the Association to cut ties with Allianz, but it decided to retain the controversial sponsorship following an Ethics and Integrity Commission report in December. Protests were held at some games last weekend and are expected to continue over the coming weeks.

Clarifying RTÉ’s position on the highlights show’s title, presenter Joanne Cantwell said on Sunday night: “We did raise concerns about the name of this very programme.

“When the show’s title was retained, we then asked again for the reason behind it, and we’re told RTÉ is contractually obliged to use Allianz in the title of its programme to reflect the official title of the Allianz GAA League.”
