A GAA club in Offaly says it “might have to lock its gates” because of ongoing vandalism to its facilities.

Edenderry GAA has vented its frustration at the recent damage caused to goal nets, underage goals, flags and even flowerpots at its grounds on the Kinnegad Road, which have undergone a €2 million upgrade in the past number of years.

“Edenderry GAA is a voluntary ran organisation run by local volunteers, funded mainly by its many members, lotto players, bingo players, brilliant sponsors and between them all, we have developed one of the best facilities in Ireland,” the club said in a Facebook post.

“Unfortunately over the past number of weeks, large gangs of youths who are non-members have been gathering in our facilities and doing lots of damage which is never nice to see and also the cost of having to replace slows down further developments.

“We are asking parents of these kids, as they know where their kids are, not to be coming into our facilities and doing harm. We have installed CCTV and will be giving it to the local Guards to deal with it from here.”
