St Thomas claimed their fifth Galway senior hurling championship title in-a-row this afternoon by edging out Loughrea 1-15 to 0-17 at Pearse Stadium.
In what was a gripping final replay, two pressure frees form Conor Cooney and superb points by Eanna Burke down the home stretch proved the difference for the holders.
Mark Caulfield’s goal 11 minutes in helped them towards a 1-5 to 0-5 lead before Loughrea answered back in brilliant fashion via the points of Jamie Ryan and Neil Keary (3).
Caulfield struck a brace to ensure St Thomas went in with the half-time lead (1-7 to 0-9) and Tiernan Killeen’s point had the game level again by the 47th minute.
Loughrea hit the front again through white flags from but Cooney and Burke would rifle over scores that paved the path to victory for Kenneth Burke’s men as Loughrea couldn’t find an equaliser.
