Longford GAA is mourning the passing of John Heneghan, who was goalkeeper on the county’s history-making 1966 National League and 1968 Leinster SFC winning teams.

Poignantly, his death occurred less than a month after his wife Mary also passed away. The Ballymahon clubman made 34 senior appearances for Longford from 1965 to ’70 during what was a golden era for the midland county. He also kept goal on the first Longford team to reach a Leinster U21FC final in 1966.

John’s importance to Longford was such that he was regularly flown home for matches from London where he worked for eight years and played for the Naomh Mhuire club. He was also selected on the Leinster Railway Cup panel in 1969 and garnered an O’Byrne Cup medal at the start of his inter-county career in 1965.

After hanging up his gloves, John continued his involvement with Longford as a goalkeeping coach and senior team selector. He also was involved with Longford U21 teams in the early 1990s.

John, who will be laid to rest in Ballymahon today (Tuesday, February 3), cemented his greatness when he was chosen as goalkeeper on the Longford GAA Gaelic Football ‘Team of the Millennium’ in 2000.
