Scotland claimed a dramatic 4-12 to 2-17 victory over Ireland at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh last night, as Zander Michie converted a last-gasp penalty to secure the visitors’ first win in the Shinty-Hurling International since 2019.
Ireland found themselves three points adrift at the interval, despite first-half goals from Darragh Neary and Diarmaid Stritch keeping the hosts firmly in contention.
Billy Nolan produced a string of impressive saves as Ireland battled back into the contest, with Aaron Dunphy, Andrew Ormond and Séamus Harnedy leading the charge. Dunphy’s accuracy from frees, coupled with a score from Sam O’Farrell, appeared to have put Ireland on course for victory.
However, Scotland refused to yield, with Iain Robinson finding the net before Innes Blackhall struck a late goal to swing the momentum back in the visitors’ favour.
Nolan converted a free in the 83rd minute to draw the sides level, setting up a dramatic finale. With Thomas Borthwick attempting to score, Ireland were penalised after Darragh Neary threw his hurley, resulting in a penalty for Scotland.
Michie held his nerve to find the net from the spot, sealing a thrilling victory for Scotland and ending Ireland’s hopes of a late turnaround in Cork.
