McKenna plans on buying a horse out of AFL Goal of the Year winnings

Conor McKenna has attributed his Gaelic football skills to his Goal of the Year in the AFL.

The 2021 Tyrone All-Ireland SFC winner's soccer-style strike for Brisbane Lions against Collingwood on Matchday 24 earned him a cool AU$50,000 (€31,056) cash prize at the annual AFL Brownlow Medal end of season awards.

McKenna, who is preparing for Brisbane's AFL Grand Final against Fremantle on Saturday, said in his acceptance speech: “A bit of my Gaelic skills came in there.

“I have my club Eglish in Co. Tyrone to thank for that so back to my young days.

“A few of the boys thought it was a fluke, but I did it again at the weekend (against Hawthorn) so I guess it’s not really.”

When asked what he will do with the prize money, McKenna replied: “If my wife asks it’s probably for the house, but if I get my way I’ll buy a horse probably, we’ll see how we go.”
