Cian O'Neill is set to appointed as the new head coach of Cork’s senior hurlers.

O’Neill departed Kerry footballers’ backroom team in the wake of their All-Ireland final defeat to Mayo and has previously worked with Cork’s senior footballers as a coach.

His last involvement with an inter-county hurling squad was back in 2011 when he served as Tipperary’s strength and conditioning coach.

O’Neill, who is currently based in Cork, managed his native Kildare for four seasons (2016-2019) and was also involved with the Kerry All-Ireland winning side of 2014 and 2025 under Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Jack O’Connor, respectively, as well as Padraic Joyce's Galway set-up from 2022 to 2024.

He previously worked with current Cork hurling supremo Ben O’Connor’s club Newtownshandrum in 2009 when they won the Munster club SHC title and reached the All-Ireland final where they lost out to Ballyhale Shamrocks.

O’Neill’s appointment comes after the recent announcement that Ronan Curran has stepped away as a selector with the Leesiders while performance coach Gerry Hussey will also not be part of the set-up next year.

This past season saw Cork relinquishing the Munster SHC title after losing the southern province’s decider to rivals Limerick and then bowing out of the All-Ireland championship to Galway at the semi-final stage.
