There was a major milestone for Connacht GAA this morning as the University of Galway Connacht GAA AirDome was inflated once again, 495 days after it was destroyed during Storm Éowyn.
At the crack of dawn, the iconic structure in Bekan returned to life in what Connacht GAA described as a “momentous day” for the province.
The original dome suffered catastrophic damage during Storm Éowyn when its cover was ripped apart by extreme winds. Despite the setback, the facility’s 4G pitch remained in use without the cover until November, ensuring clubs and teams across the province could continue to benefit from the venue.
A replacement dome cover was manufactured in Slovenia before being transported to Mayo for installation, with work now progressing ahead of the facility’s full reopening.
Connacht GAA paid tribute to everyone involved in bringing the project back to life, acknowledging the huge effort required to restore one of the province’s flagship sporting facilities.
The reopening of the AirDome will provide a major boost for clubs, schools, and teams throughout Connacht, with the state-of-the-art indoor venue once again set to play a key role in Gaelic Games development across the province.
