Paul Flynn and Enda McGinley have endorsed Leinster GAA chairman Martin Byrne’s call for Friday night Championship games.

Writing in his programme notes for last Saturday evening’s Leinster SFC Round 1 clash between Laois and Offaly, Byrne made a case for Friday night games involving neighbouring counties due to the condensed season and the high volume of games it brings.

Speaking on The Sunday Game, former Dublin star Flynn said: "Bring it on. We really have to be better at marketing our games. Friday night? Everybody would love it.

“Have them local, have them a little bit later at half past eight. Make sure the players are sorted out for whatever expenses are required for them to be able to get away from work a little bit earlier. Have them [the games] planned far in advance as you possibly can so they can prepare for it.

"It would be really welcome. For us as analysts in the game and as a fan, you would love to see a Friday night game.”

Tyrone great McGinley echoed Flynn’s views when saying: “Absolutely, even through the National League where it might a wee bit easier to plan.

“Sometimes in the Championship, if the draw is not made too far in advance it might be more difficult to make it happen. But yeah, I think there’s a future in Friday night games.

“There will be issues in terms of player recompense, but they are frequently on holidays over the last period as we know so half-days on Fridays is bound to be workable – particularly if the two counties are close.”
