Tommy Fitzgerald has welcomed Stephen ‘Picky’ Maher’s return to the Laois hurling fold after a two-year absence.
The veteran Clough/Ballacolla sharpshooter came off the bench to score two points as the O’Moore County defeated Westmeath by 1-23 to 0-17 in Mullingar last Sunday to all but assure themselves of a place in the Allianz Hurling League Division 2 final. It was his first appearance since Laois came up short against Wexford in their 2024 All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final.
“He’s a great bit of stuff and we’re delighted to have him back,” the Laois manager enthused when speaking to the local media.
“He adds so much to the group in terms of his maturity and experience, just his presence around with all the younger lads. He’s been working really hard the last couple of months, and fair play to Alison (physio) and Paddy (S&C) who have gotten him back into good nick.
“We’ll continue to mind him over the next couple of weeks, but he’s a serious addition and we’re delighted to have him. It was great to see him come on and get two points as well.”
