Kingscourt Stars' Kevin Curtis celebrates

Kingscourt Stars moved to the top of the table in the Cavan senior football championship last night thanks to a 3-13 to 1-10 win against Ballyhaise in Mullagh.

Colin Kelly’s side had edged a 0-3 to 0-2 lead when Kevin Curtis struck their first goal midway through the first-half and they’d extend their advantage through the points of Cian Shekleton and Curtis before Killian Brady pulled back a goal for Ballyhaise.

The Stars responded to the concession perfectly, netting their second goal through 2020 All-Star winner Padraig Faulkner as they went on to hold a 2-6 to 1-5 lead at the break.

Points from Martin Conaty, Padraig Moore and Brady helped Ballyhaise, who netted six times in their opening round clash with Laragh United last weekend, cut their deficit down to two points, but the Meath border men soon got motoring again.

Curtis and Shekleton (free) sent over points ahead of Meath ace Jordan Morris coming off the bench to net the town side’s third goal, pushing the margin out to eight from where Kelly’s men were able to secure their second win in as many games having edged Cavan Gaels by a point last weekend.

This evening (Saturday) in Round 2 of the Oliver Plunkett Cup race, last year’s runners-up Ramor United take on intermediate champions Arva at Kingspan Breffni (7pm).
