Dublin loss down to leaders underperforming, says McMahon

Eight-time All-Ireland winner Philly McMahon feels that Dublin’s wayward shooting last Sunday at Croke Park may have impacted them at the other end of the pitch as well.

The Dubs went down in a 0-24 to 0-19 defeat to Armagh in the second round of the All-Ireland SFC group stage at HQ, where they registered 17 wides over the 70 minutes.

Former defender McMahon was speaking on the Indo Sport podcast this week and said that he feels there is a leadership problem for the capital men at the minute.

“Dublin, for some reason, when they’re losing games, and again it probably is an obvious thing, is their leaders are underperforming,” said the two-time All-Star winner.

“When you have Con (O’Callaghan), (Ciaran) Kilkenny, (Brian) Howard, (Sean) Bugler, (Niall) Scully to an extent, and (Cormac) Costello, when you see those boys shooting the scores that they can, it reverberates around to the younger lads and has a huge impact on the defence.

“I haven’t seen Dublin this year been really, really good defensively with them not playing well.”
