Cormac Costello fisted the later winner as Dublin denied Clare an upset at Croke Park tonight with a 0-16 to 1-12 victory at Croke Park.

The Leinster champions scores the last seven points at HQ to secure their fourth win in as many outings in unconvincing style and stay on course for promotion from Division 2 of the Allianz Football League.

Dessie Farrell’s men had been 0-8 to 0-7 in front when Gavin Cooney got in behind their defence for the game’s only goal on 34 minutes.

That strike sent the Banner men in with a 1-8 to 0-8 interval lead and points from Emmet McMahon (2), Gavin Cooney and Eoin Cleary would see them five to the good with 13 minutes remaining.

Jack McCaffrey, Colm Basquel and Eoin Murchan came into the fray for Farrell in the closing 10 minutes and they’d have an impact as Ciaran Kilkenny and Dean Rock soon made it a one score game.

Con O’Callaghan and Rock (free) had the margin down to one before Rock sailed over a free on the 70-minute mark and Costello would be the one to break Clare hearts with a fisted point at the death.
