The Super 8

(Oldest Posts First)

Just wondering how this works but if you were to pick the top 8 how could you include Cavan in this group.
Dublin
Mayo
Kerry
Monaghan
Donegal
Tyrone
Roscommon
Cork

Now where does Cavan fit into this group off 8
You Have
Sligo
Tipperary
Clare
Fermanagh
Down
Derry
Laois
Derry
Waterford
Longford
Westmeath

Most or all of those teams listed in second tier would give Cavan a game. Cavan are division 1 next year, but not a division 1 quality team player wise.

Maybe not all. Cavan would have too much for Waterford.

Is this a trick question as there aren't 8 in the 2nd group. Do I get a prize?

I am not sure how the super 8 works and I was wondering how so many feel Cavan have no problem being in this super 8. I am wondering what you have to do to be in it. Does it not include the top 8 teams in the country or if they are unlucky to be knocked out early are they gone. I am thinking of the likes of Mayo Tyrone Cork/Kerry ect. Donegal/Monaghan ect.

The Quiet Man... you have 3988 posts ….. apparently... and you don't know how it all works ?
besides that , no-one I know says that Cavan are going to make the Super 8s.
You have also missed Galway off your list and Carlow too of the second list (although I don't know what that second list is.
Just a FYI in case you are a genuine poster.
The super 8s are comprised of the 4 provincial winners plus the 4 provincial runner-ups (or the team that beats them in round 4 of the qualifiers). So for Cavan to make the super 8's , we would need to beat Wicklow in round 1 of the qualifiers , win round 2 and round 3 (by avoiding either Mayo or Tyrone) and then beat a provincial runner-up in round 4.
(the provincial runner-up will probably be either Galway or Roscommon, Donegal or Monaghan, Carlow or Laois, Kerry or Cork. A tall order indeed.

so I suppose we could conceivably be extremely lucky , beat Wicklow in round 1, beat Louth in round 2, beat offaly in round 3 and beat Laois in round 4.

You haven't included Galway in the list Quietman. They might very well be in first 4. Depends on draw but for a team like Cavan to get into super 8 we would need at least one big result. Very tall order. If Roscommon were in the back door a draw against them would be interesting.

Yes in deed I did leave out Galway my mistake.
I was just wondering how so many people think this Cavan team will make the top 8 thank you for explaining it to me. There is no way then that Cavan can be lucky in every draw getting the weaker teams. It's the only way we can see how good they are or even bad ? is to draw a strong team at least we might get some idea how the league will pan out next year.

The format of Super 8 is on a 3 year trial, basically you'll have 2 groups of 4, in Group 1 you'll have the Munster & Connacht champions, and the runners up in Ulster & Leinster (or whoever beats them in round 4). In group 2 there'll be the Ulster & Leinster champions and the runners up in Munster & Connacht (or whoever beats them in round 4). Each team will have a home game, an away game and a game at Croke Park and the top two teams will qualify for the All Ireland semi finals.

apart from Dublin who will play no home games...though this will be to their advantage
