Three-in-a-row chasing Gowna remain without a win in the Cavan senior football championship race two games in after falling to a shock defeat at the hands of Ballyhaise yesterday evening.
It finished 3-9 to 0-17 in Ballinagh, where the intermediate champions’ red-hot start saw them bagging three goals in the opening minutes via Martin Conaty, David Brady and Michael Brady.
Having trailed by 3-5 to 0-8 at the half, the holders would battle back and got their deficit down to a point after Cian Madden sailed over in the 55th minute, but Cormac Callaghan’s score with a minute left in normal time would end up being the insurance for Ballyhaise.
The defeat leaves Gowna sitting in 10th place in the SFC table, while Ballyhaise are bumped up eight with rounds remaining and top eight teams advancing to the knock-out stages.
Elsewhere yesterday, Castlerahan secured their first points in this year’s Oliver Plunkett Cup race by handing neighbours Lavey a 1-14 to 0-12 defeat in Virginia, where David Wright bagged the game’s only goal in the first-half.
