Offaly camogie club notes

The Drumcullen Under 10 team that played in the blitz in Kinnitty last Saturday.

Kinnitty Camogie Club

Under 14s

Our under 14s got their championship campaign under way with a trip to Killurin last Tuesday night against St Sinchills.  Our girls played with the wind in the first half and took full advantage of it with Moya Guinan finding the net from a free after just three minutes.  Aoibhe Longworth added a point and then found the net shortly afterwards to leave Kinnitty leading by 2-1 to 0-0.  St Sinchills then opened their account with a couple of points from free before the water break in the first half.  After the break the teams traded points before Aoibhe found the net again to leave Kinnitty with a sizeable half time lead.

The first quarter of the second half was a complete turnaround, however with St Sinchill’s now playing with the breeze and blitzed Kinnitty with 6 goals, 4 from play and 2 from placed balls.  After the water break St Sinchills added 2 points but Aoibhe and Moya found the net again for Kinnitty.  Unfortunately, our girls could not close the lead that

St Sinchills built in the 3rd quarter.  While the final score of 6-5 to 5-2 will be disappointing to our girls, their overall performance during the match should give them great hope for the remainder of the campaign.  Well done on your performance to all the team.

Team:  Abi Browne, Niamh Ramsbottom, Kiera Leahy (Captain), Aoife McGovern, Alison Ryan, Caitlin O’Neill, Meadbh Dooley, Moya Guinan, Katie Standish, Amber Mortimer, Ella Boland, Hannah Robinson, Abbie Shepperd, Aoibhe Longworth, Kate Browne.

Subs:  Maisie O’Neill, Saoirse Evans, Kate Maher

Under 10 Blitz

On Saturday morning we hosted Naomh Brid, Drumcullen and Lusmagh in the first round of under 10 blitzes of the year.  While it has been said over and over again about how good it is to see girls back playing camogie, this was never more evident than on Saturday morning, when the girls and coaches from the 4 clubs busied themselves getting ready for games.  The excitement and anticipation of the blitz was soon outshone by the action once the girls started playing.  Every single girl gave their all, none more so than those from Kinnitty and the coaches cannot but have been impressed as the girls put into practice what they’ve been doing in training.  Final scores are more or less irrelevant at Under 10, but that does not stop girls quizzing their coaches after the final whistle, “did we win, did we win” and let’s just say our girls left the field on Saturday morning with big smiles on their faces, and this wasn’t just because of the crisps and drinks handed out afterwards.  Congratulations to everyone from Naomh Brid, Drumcullen, Lusmagh and of course our own girls, coaches and everyone from the club that made the blitz and great success.

Team:

Intermediate League

Our adult girls had their first competitive game on Saturday evening, in the league, against St Sinchills.  The team were sluggish in the first quarter and found themselves down 2-4 to 0-0 at the waterbreak in the first half.  They managed to stem the flow somewhat in the 2nd quarter and opened their account with 2 points to leave the half time score showing Kinnitty 0-2, St Sinchills 2-8.

Kinnitty continued to improve after the break and held St Sinchills scoreless in the 3rd quarter while adding 5 points to their tally but it was in the final quarter when the girls really upped the tempo and showed their fighting spirit, hitting 3 goals and a point.  Try as the might, however they could not close the gap and St Sinchills ran out winners on a two point margin to leave the final score showing Kinnitty 3-8, St Sinchills 3-10.  Despite the defeat the management team cannot but have been impressed by the girls fighting spirit to come back from a 12 point deficit at half time to lose by just 2 points.

Under 10 blitz

St Sinchills Camogie Club

Under 10:

Well done to our Under 10 girls on their first blitz of the year in Tullamore last Saturday. St Sinchills fielded 3 teams who played matches against Tullamore, Kilcormac Killoughey and Edenderry. There was great skill and determination on display from everyone.

Under 14:

Well done to our U14 team who had a great victory on Tuesday evening. The girls were behind but settled into the game and worked hard to come back and claim a win on a score line of 6-5 to 5-2. 11 scores is a great outcome for their first outing together on a full pitch. Congratulations to all 20 girls who were terrific on the night.

Scorers: S. Nunan 2-2, R.McEvoy 0-1, K.Lawlor 1-2, K.Dunne 2-0, AM.Clear 1-0

Intermediate League:

Well done to our adult team who had a superb victory in the first round of the league last Saturday evening against Kinnitty.

St.Sinchills hit the ground running once the ball was threw in and had 2-4 notched up before the water break. Terrific teamwork and passing lead to some very well taken scores.

Lauren Keenahan got Sinchills off the mark with a 45 a few minutes into the game and it wasn’t long before she followed this up with a well taken score from play. Captain Roisin Keenahan then found the net after some good work out the field from the Sinchills half back line of Rachel Dillon, Eabha Flanagan and Helen Hensey. Two more quality points followed from the stick of Bridin Walsh and Keelin Guilfoyle after superb fielding and passing from Rachel Dillon. Just before the water break good work from Lisa Brady and Aoibheann Walsh resulted in Kellie Kinahan finding the net after a great run through the Kinnitty defence.

Kinnitty came out after the water break and scored two unanswered points before Lauren Keenahan who was a thorn in the Kinnitty side all evening was fouled and pointed the resultant free. Bridin Walsh followed this up with another well taken point from play. Kinnitty finished the half well but good work from the Sinchills full back line of Muireann Carton, Ciara Glynn and Fiadh Dolan along with goalie Shauna Denemeed dealt with the increasing pressure that came their way.

Half time score: St Sinchills 2-6 Kinnitty 0-3

The second half was a much closer contest. The switch of Patrice Delaney from centre back to centre forward worked well for Kinnitty and her and Lauren Keenahan traded points both from place balls and from play for the rest of the half. At the water break the score stood at St Sinchills 2-8 to Kinnitty 0-7. After the water break Kinnitty scored 1-1 without reply before Lauren Keenahan pointed a free and great work from Hannah Dunne set Roisin Keenahan up to finish her second goal to the net. Kinnitty didn’t go down with out a fight and hit the back of the net twice in the next 5 minutes leaving an anxious last few minutes. Lauren Keenahan replied with another point from play before Kinnitty had a free with the last puck of the game which just travelled over the crossbar. Well done to both teams on a fantastic match.
