Bennis to continue as Limerick manager

September 13, 2006

Richie Bennis
Richie Bennis has been appointed Limerick hurling manager for a two-year term. Bennis assumed the role of caretaker manager following Joe McKenna's shock resignation in the wake of the crushing All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Clare in Ennis this summer. Former player Gary Kirby will act as coach and selector, while Bernie Hartigan, Anthony O'Riordan and Tony Hickey are also selectors. Like Bennis, Hartigan was a member of the last Limerick team to win an All-Ireland senior title in 1973. Dave Moriarty, who was previously involved with the county footballers, is the new trainer. The appointments were rubber-stamped by the Limerick county board on Tuesday night, September 12, after seven nominations were received for the post of manager. Chairman Denis Holmes told delegates that two of the nominees had withdrawn their names, while another did not turn up for interview and instead sent in his CV. Holmes revealed that former Clare selector Tony Considine has expressed an interest, but the board could not agree terms and conditions with him. Meanwhile, former Kerry star Mickey 'Ned' O'Sullivan has been given the green light to continue as Limerick football manager for another two years. Cian O'Neill was appointed coach and will also act as a selector.
