Tyrone hurling boss resigns after less than a month

Tyrone hurling has been dealt a huge set back with the news that their senior hurling manager has stepped down after less than a month in charge.

Dominic Kearns confirmed his decision this week and it's understood that the Dunloy native's decision has come down to a move by the players from Eoghan Ruadgh to withdraw from the Red Hands' squad.

The Dungannon club is thought to have issues with the county board over their county championship final defeat to Carrickmore last season and with 13 members of the last year's county squad absent this year, Kearns felt he had no choice but to step down from his post.

"I'm disappointed that things haven't progressed successfully with Tyrone," Kearns told The Irish News.

"We had a comprehensive programme planned out but with internal county issues and players not making themselves available because of them, we haven't been able to move forward with it.

"As management we needed all the county's best players to realise the benefits of the programme but that hasn't transpired for us.

"Given this we've decided to step aside and hopefully for the sake of Tyrone hurling players get closure of some sort and get back playing for their county."

While Kearns had yet to be officially ratified to his role, he had taken over the reins of the team last month and brought ex-manager and former Cork and Limerick coach Jerry Wallace and ex-Antrim star Conor Cunning to his backroom team.
