Castlebar Mitchels claimed their first Mayo senior football championship crown in nine years with victory over Garrymore in Castlebar this afternoon.
It finished 1-17 to 0-12 at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, where 'Man of the Match' Bob Tuohy led the charge with an outstanding 0-6 from play, including a superb two-pointer, as Mitchels dominated the opening half.
Joe Forry and Cian Walsh also impressed, with Castlebar building a commanding 0-9 to 0-4 half-time advantage after a strong opening spell.
Garrymore battled back in the second-half, with two-pointers by Aaron Hughes and Trevor Nally helping keep their hopes alive, while county defender Eoin McGreal added further scores.
However, Castlebar held firm as Forry and Tuohy kept the scoreboard ticking over prior to John MacMonagle’s powerful run earning them a late penalty.
Cian Walsh converted clinically in the 59th minute to seal the title, securing Castlebar the Paddy Moclair Cup for the first time since 2017 and sending them into the Connacht club SFC where London champions Fulham Irish await.
