Rathvilly avenged last year’s final heartbreak by overcoming holders Old Leighlin (0-14 to 1-8) to claim the Carlow senior football championship title at Netwatch Cullen Park.

Old Leighlin struck the game’s only goal through Cathal Coughlan in the ninth minute, but Rathvilly responded well and would take in a 0-8 to 1-3 lead at half-time.

Liam Gavin led the scoring for Rathvilly in the opening period, with Brendan Murphy, Kevin Murphy and Darragh Murphy also contributing points.

Scores from Brandon Kelly and Conor Doyle helped Rathvilly maintain their advantage, while substitutes Brynn Nolan and Eric Molloy added crucial points late on.

Seamus Kinsella and James Dowling kept Old Leighlin in the hunt to try and retain their title, but Doyle’s late score sealed the deal for Rathvilly.
