St Mary’s were crowned Sligo senior football champions for the first time since 2015 after holding off a late Shamrock Gaels comeback to secure a thrilling 1-12 to 1-10 victory at Markievicz Park.
Robert O’Kelly-Lynch’s early goal set the tone, while Nathan Rooney finished with seven points, including a crucial late free, to earn Man of the Match honours.
St Mary’s led 1-6 to 0-3 at half-time and extended their advantage to six points after the break, with Rooney and Eli Rooney among the scorers.
Shamrock Gaels fought back dramatically when Shane Deignan found the net, reducing the deficit to a single point in the closing stages. However, St Mary’s held their nerve, with Rooney’s stoppage-time free sealing the win.
The victory delivers a memorable 12th county title for the Sligo town club in their 50th anniversary year, ending an 11-year wait to lift the Owen B Hunt Cup.
