Slashers retain Longford SHC crown

Reuben Murray struck 0-9 as Longford Slashers retained the Jimmy Duignan Cup with a 1-22 to 1-12 victory over Wolfe Tones at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park yesterday.

The holders withstood a second half rally from the Mostrim men to prevail for the second year-in-a-row, outscoring their opponents by 1-5 to 0-1 down the home stretch to run out comfortable winners in the end.

Substitute John Mulhern’s 49th minute goal brought Wolfe Tones to within three points, 1-11 to 0-17, but Robbie Stakelum’s men finished with a flourish, with David Buckley’s injury-time goal putting the icing on the cake.

Man of the match Murray was ably assisted by full back Stephen Oates and Sean Tiernan, who hit 0-3 off the bench, on a day when Slashers had nine different scorers.
