Galway landed their first Leinster senior hurling championship title in eight years with an impressive display against Dublin at Croke Park this evening.
It finished 4-29 to 4-15 at headquarters, where the Tribesmen got their hands on the coveted Bob O’Keeffe Cup for the fourth time ever after a superb attacking display in the second-half that now progresses them straight through to the All-Ireland semi-finals.
Darragh Neary’s goal saw Micheál Donoghue’s side holding a 1-7 to 0-3 lead after 11 minutes before Dublin battled back in the second quarter and saw a Conal O Riain goal trim their deficit down to one by the 22nd minute.
Thomas Monaghan (0-7) and Aaron Niland (1-8) pushed the Galway lead out to four again – and it’d be the difference between the sides come the interval, as Conor Whelan’s point left it at 1-15 to 1-11 when the teams went in.
Whelan and Monaghan raised white flags for the victors early in the second-half and they’d up their advantage to eight before the capital men won a penalty which saw Whelan black-carded and Donal Burke converting on 56 minutes.
Galway pushed on again with scores via U20 ace Niland (two frees) and Neary before the former converted a penalty with 10 minutes to go in normal time.
The game would be well and truly up for Dublin once Conor Cooney got in for Galway’s fourth goal two minutes later, with late majors from O Riain and Fergal Whitley either side of a John Fleming goal only serving as consolation for Niall Ó Ceallacháin’s side who will now face Clare in the All-Ireland quarter-finals in two weeks' time.
