A 60th minute Mark Coleman penalty proved key as Cork defeated Waterford (1-26 to 0-25) this evening to chalk up their third straight win in the Munster senior hurling championship.
An airtight contest at Azzurri Walsh Park saw the sides level 11 times before the Rebels won their penalty that saw Coleman dispatch the game’s only goal and frees from Alan Connolly and skipper Darragh Fitzgibbon down the home stretch put a seal on the win which edges Ben O’Connor’s men closer to the southern province’s decider.
Dessie Hutchinson’s point saw Waterford going in with a 0-14 to 0-13 lead at the end of the first-half and the Ballygunner ace would double his side’s lead with a free in the first minute of the restart.
Cork battled back to eventually level matters at 0-22 apiece by the 57th minute thanks to scores from Fitzgibbon, Connolly, William Buckley and Shane Barrett.
Connolly shot the visitors in front and Coleman’s penalty would put them four to the good ahead of Hutchinson sending over his sixth point of the evening.
Hutchinson sailed over two more frees in between the placed balls from Connolly and Fitzgibbon, as O’Connor’s side won out by four in the end to cement third win of the campaign.
The result means that the only way the Leesiders won’t return to the Munster final is if both Clare and Limerick are victorious in their remaining games and also better them on scoring difference.
