Roscommon will play Galway in the Connacht senior football championship final in two weeks’ time after delivering a superb display against Mayo in Castlebar this afternoon.
It finished 2-25 to 1-18 at MacHale Park, where Mark Dowd’s men blew their oppponents away in the second-half to book their first provincial final berth in four years.
The hosts had registered the first four points of this derby semi-final, with their fourth coming from senior championship debutant Kobe McDonald, but the Rossies hit back with a Diarmuid Murtagh goal before Robert Heneghan’s point levelled on the quarter hour mark.
Mayo sent over the next three scores, with the visitors responding via a brace of Murtagh points (one free) prior to Ryan Donoghue hammering in a goal for Andy Moran’s men on 27 minutes.
From there, Mayo moved towards a 1-11 to 1-8 half-time lead which would be wiped out after their neighbours sent over the first five scores of the second-half, including a Murtagh two-pointer.
Mayo got back within two before Murtagh repeated the trick in the 47th minute and, after points from Matthew Ruane and Paddy Durcan erased that long-range effort, the Rossies went on to hit eight points unanswered in an impressive spell.
It left the pre-match favourites with a mountain to try and climb in the closing stages, and an O’Donoghue (free) and McDonald placed ball from beyond the arc would be nowhere near enough, as Roscommon closed out a brilliant win with a Heneghan goal which left double figures between the teams come the final whistle.
