Kilkenny bounced back from their defeat to Galway in the opening round of the Leinster senior hurling championship last weekend by seeing off Wexford on a 5-21 to 1-16 scoreline at UPMC Nowlan Park this evening.
TJ Reid registered 1-9 while Martin Keoghan bagged a brace of goals as the Cats got their provincial campaign up and running by inflicting the Slaneysiders with their first defeat in this year’s Bob O’Keeffe Cup race.
The holders had been 0-11 to 0-7 ahead when Keoghan hammered in their first goal in the 34th minute, with Kevin Foley pulling a goal back for the visitors just before the interval.
Simon Roche’s point early in the restart cut the difference to three for Keith Rossiter’s men, but a Liam Moore goal put six between the teams again and, after a brace of points from Foley, Cian Kenny would fire a quick 1-1 to put the Cats firmly in control.
Keoghan lashed in the fourth Kilkenny goal on 54 minutes, with four Reid frees following it up to leave the scoreline reading 4-17 to 1-13.
Kenny and Richie Lawlor traded points after that and Damien Reck and Chin (free) would round off the Model men’s tally ahead of Reid drilling in his side’s fifth goal deep in injury-time - a score which saw him surpassing former Cork ace Patrick Horgan as the hurling championship's all-time top scorer.
