Roscommon will play Mayo in the semi-finals of the Connacht senior football championship in two weeks’ time after dealing New York a comprehensive 5-22 to 1-10 defeat at Gaelic Park.

Mark Dowd’s men rattled the net inside the opening minute of this provincial quarter-final through talisman Enda Smith, with New York responding well from the early concession by netting one of their own via Cavan native Jack McKenna in the fourth minute.

Robert Heneghan would fire in the game’s third goal two minutes later and, from there, the visitors never looked back as ‘keeper Conor Carroll sent over back-to-back ‘45s’ for them and Dylan Ruane would find the Exiles’ net after that.

Daire Cregg and Conor Ryan added points to the Rossies’ tally ahead of Conor Keenan pulling one back for the hosts, and the victors finished out the half strong with Heneghan grabbing his second goal and Eoin McCormack adding another.

The only blemish for Dowd’s men came five minutes before the break when Daire Cregg was dismissed on a straight red card by referee Brendan Cawley which is set to see the full-forward suspended for the showdown with Mayo in a fortnight’s time.

Roscommon sent over the first four points of the second-half to stretch their advantage to 5-15 to 1-4, with Frank O’Reilly hitting New York’s next three scores.

Former London forward Killian Butler and Meath man O’Reilly would raise the home side’s tally to 1-10 before Enda Smith rounded off the 24-point victory for the visitors.
