Wicklow came good in the second-half to edge out Donegal by 3-16 to 2-18 in Aughrim this afternoon and claim Allianz Hurling League Division 3 honours.
Jonathan ‘Bosco’ O’Neill’s team backed up last weekend’s promotion with a superb victory here and, in the end, it was two late goals from Seanie Germaine that propelled them to the title.
It was Gavin Browne’s goal that moved Donegal in front in the 22nd minute of this decider and points via Browne, Liam McKinney (3, 2 frees) and Richie Ryan moved the visitors towards a 1-11 to 0-9 advantage at half-time.
Another McKinney free stretched the Tir Chonaill lead early in the restart before Germaine fired in Wicklow’s first goal and they’d have the gap closed by the 48th minute with the help of points from Eoin McCormack, Sam O’Dowd and Luke Evans.
Padraig Doyle would eventually put the Garden men in front with a 61st minute point, but it’d be wiped out by a McKinney goal three minutes later and two more points from McKinney (one ‘65’) looked like being enough for Donegal until Germaine’s brace of goals in injury-time secured a dramatic late win for Wicklow.
