Last Wednesday evening’s Connacht U20FC Round 1 clash between Galway and Roscommon in Tuam was notable for two cousins lining out against each other.

Brian Carroll was sub-goalkeeper for Galway, while his cousin Mark Carroll was Roscommon’s replacement netminder. Brian is a brother of Roscommon senior goalie Conor Carroll who transferred from Oranmore-Maree to St Brigid’s last year.

Remarkably, Conor’s main competition for the Roscommon senior No. 1 jersey is another cousin, Aaron Brady, while Shane’s younger brother Mark and fellow-goalkeeper is a member of the Roscommon U17 squad that travels to Tubbercurry tonight to face Sligo in the first round of the Connacht MFC.

All five custodians are nephews of former Roscommon GAA chairman and current CCCC chair Brian Carroll.
