Three well-known hurling referees are currently stranded in Dubai after flights were cancelled due to air strikes in the Middle East.
Ciaran Flynn, who is also Meath GAA secretary, two-time All-Ireland SHC final referee James McGrath from Westmeath and young Cork whistler Shane Scanlon have been unable to return home after they travelled to the United Arab Emirates to officiate at last weekend’s Middle East Hurling League finals. The tournament had just ended when a loud bang was heard overhead and prompted the UAE Ministry of Interior to advise residents and visitors to seek shelter indoors due to incoming missiles.
“What began as a positive sporting occasion was overshadowed by the escalating regional tensions and missile interceptions across the UAE,” Flynn wrote on Facebook.
“I am grateful for the excellent support provided by the Irish Foreign Ministry, the Middle East GAA board and UAE authorities during this unexpected situation.
“My thanks extend to family, friends and colleagues at home for their concern and messages of support. May God bless all those impacted by the ongoing conflict in the region.”
