Derry trounce Cork for fourth win while Wexford see off Sligo

Derry took a huge stride towards promotion back to Division 1 of the Allianz Football League by dealing Cork their first loss of the campaign this afternoon.

It finished 1-31 to 0-14 at Celtic Park, where Shane McGuigan struck 0-9 for the hosts while Lachlan Murray weighed in with 1-4 in the emphatic victory.

Murray’s goal came on the eve of half-time and saw the Oak Leafers carrying in a 1-10 to 0-9 lead at the break, with points from McGuigan, Murray and Niall Loughlin extending their team’s advantage to nine within 10 minutes of the restart.

Loughlin sent over a two-pointer after that and Niall Toner and Ethan Doherty raised white flags that made it 1-20 to 0-10, leaving the stunned Rebels with a mountain to try and climb in the closing 20 minutes.

Dara Sheedy grabbed the Munster side’s first score of the second-half and Darragh Cashman would add two more ahead of a McGuigan two-pointer and singles by Sean Kearney, Dan Higgins and Paul Cassidy rounding off a superb display by Ciaran Meenagh’s men.

Meanwhile, the day sole clash in Division 3 saw Wexford getting back to winning ways against Sligo (0-16 to 1-7) to move up to second in the table.

Two-pointers from Sean Nolan, Eoghan Nolan and Darragh Brooks (free) helped the Slaneysiders towards a 0-10 to 0-3 lead at half-time at Chadwicks Wexford Park and they’d move 10 ahead in the second-half before Shane Deignan grabbed a consolation goal for the visitors.
