Meath's Lorcan Byrne gains possession ahead of Derry's Joseph Mulholland during the NHL Division 2 clash at Trim

Meath 1-20 Derry 1-18

A late brace from keeper Gavin King and a brilliant effort from Lorcan Byrne was enough for Meath to see off a determined Derry side in this National Hurling League Division 2 round 4 clash played in windy conditions at Lomans Park Trim.

Derry played with the elements in the opening half and took a 1-12 ro 0-7 win to the dressing room at the break.

The visitors were 0-7 to 0-5 in front before the games first goal arrived courtesy of keeper Sean Kelly from a penalty. Derry pushed on from there and fine efforts from Eamon Cassidy (2), Darragh McGilligan, and Shea Cassidy (2) gave them that eight point lead at the break.

Jarlath Ennis, the Cole’s Joey and Mikey and Mark Leavy reduced that lead with fine points in the opening eight minutes of the second half. Johnny Greville’s men were right back in the game a minute later with a Lorcan Byrne goal and the lead was down to two, 1-13 to 1-11. Cassidy kept the scoreboard ticking over for Derry from frees and with five minutes left they still held a narrow 1-17 to 1-16 lead.

Tom Shine tied the game up before Meath were rewarded a penalty. Keeper Gavin King saw his fine effort brilliantly saved by Kelly and it was still all to play for. King made amends soon after with two outstanding points from long range frees to put his team two up. Deaghlan Foley made it a one point game but a great catch and a point on the turn from Byrne saw Meath record their second win of the campaign.
