Roscommon came from 13 points down to defeat Galway by 2-16 to 0-21 in Salthill this evening to claim their third successive win in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League.
Ciaran Lennon’s point at the death proved the difference between these provincial rivals in the end as Mark Dowd’s men joined Donegal on six points at the top of the table with three rounds remaining for them.
After an even opening quarter at Pearse Stadium, the hosts began to pull clear as two-pointers from Matthew Tierney and Liam O Conghaile sailed over and another by O Conghaile, along with the scores of John Maher, Rob Finnerty (2) and Shane McGrath (2) had the Tribesmen in a commanding 0-16 to 0-5 lead come half-time.
Finnerty and O Conghaile made it 0-19 to 0-6 within seven minutes of the resumption, but the one-way traffic would stop after that as Daire Cregg (free) and Diarmuid Murtagh saw points backed up by an Enda Smith goal in the 51st minute.
That ignited the Rossies, with a Murtagh two-pointer and two frees from Cregg to follow ahead of an Aaron Brady ‘45’ and a Dylan Ruane effort from distance suddenly making it a two-point game.
Then came a Cregg goal that fired the visitors ahead prior to Sean Kelly levelling and Lennon grabbing the winner before the hooter sounded.
