Derry's Shane McGuigan celebrates with Conor Doherty

Derry struck three well-timed goals on the way to a 3-15 to 1-18 victory over Kildare at Cedral St Conleth's Park this evening.

Both sides finished this one with 14 men after Conor Glass received his marching orders just six minutes in, while Kildare’s talisman Alex Berine was red-carded in the 29th minute.

The Oak Leafers had been 0-6 to 0-4 in front when Shane McGuigan hammered in their first goal in the 15th minute, with Kildare hitting the next three points unanswered.

Niall Loughlin and Conor Doherty picked up black cards for Derry either side of the sending off of Beirne and it was the hosts that charged towards a 1-10 to 1-6 half-time lead afterwards, with Brian McLoughlin netting their goal from a free just before the break.

Ben Loakman extended the Lilywhites advantage early in the resumption ahead of them being rocked by back-to-back goals from Paul Cassidy and Lachlan Murray over the next two minutes.

Ciaran Meenagh’s men pushed on from there with Murray, Matthew Downey, Loughlin (2) and McGuigan (free) all shooting over scores.

Points by Loakman (free) and sub Neil Flynn would keep Kildare right in the hunt until the end before McGuigan and Murray shot over the insurance scores late on for the Ulster side.
