Cork produced a strong finish to see off Tipperary by 0-29 to 0-22 tonight and claim their third consecutive in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League.
The highly anticipated clash - a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland SHC final - was played before a 30,910 crowd at Pairc Ui Chaoimh where both sides finished with 14 men.
The points of Alan Connolly, Shane Barrett, Diarmuid Healy and Eoin Downey had helped the Rebels to pull five clear by the 30th minute before both sides saw red late in the first-half.
The fracas that broke out in the run up to the break saw both Barrett and Jason Forde receiving their marching orders as Ben O’Connor’s men carried in a 0-16 to 0-12 advantage.
Darragh Fitzgibbon sailed over the opening score of the second-half and the Leesiders would push their advantage out to seven over the next quarter of an hour or so.
A Brian Hayes point made it 0-23 to 0-16 prior to Darragh McCarthy and Eoghan Connolly sending over scores that dwindled the All-Ireland champions’ deficit down to three.
Back-to-back Alan Connolly points were timely for the Munster champions down the home stretch and they’d see out the victory thanks to points via Tim O’Mahony and Diarmuid Healy.
