Three well-time goals helped Roscommon to get off the mark in their Allianz Football League Division 1 campaign at Monaghan’s expense.
It finished 3-16 to 1-16 at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park, where Enda Smith (2) and Diarmuid Murtagh rattled the net for the home side as they bounced back from last weekend’s late loss to Kerry while inflicting the Farney men with their second defeat of the campaign.
It was the visitors that made the better start in this one, netting themselves an early goal, but it’d be wiped out by Smith’s in the eighth minute as the Rossies’ talisman sent in a brilliant finish past Rory Beggan.
Beggan (free), Micheál Bannigan and Andrew Woods all sailed over points in the second quarter to usher Monaghan towards a 1-8 to 1-6 half-time advantage.
Points from Dylan Ruane and Darragh Heneghan served to bring Mark Dowd’s men level within two minutes of the restart and Murtagh’s goal would put them three to the good before Daire Cregg’s two-pointer was backed up by a Smith penalty.
Bannigan, Stephen O’Hanlon and Stephen Mooney all pulled back points for the Ulster men, but Roscommon saw out the six-point win with Smith and Paul Carey raising late white flags for them.
