Mayo got their first competitive win under manager Andy Moran after edging out Galway by 3-18 to 2-18 in an entertaining derby clash in Salthill.
Aidan O’Shea, Darragh Beirne and Cian McHale supplied the goals for the visitors as they got up and running early in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League.
O’Shea’s goal saw Moran’s men towards a 1-12 to 0-9 half-time lead, with goalkeeper Robbie Hennelly, who would be TG4’s selection for ‘Man of the Match’ and Jack Carney also supplying two-pointers in the run up to the break.

Hennelly sailed over another two-point free three minutes into the restart and the ball would be in the Tribesmen’s net again in 41st minute via Beirne.
The margin between the two teams widened out to 10 points before Padraic Joyce’s men put together 1-4 without reply, including a goal from Shane McGrath which would be wiped out by McHale at the other end.
The home side fought to the finish, netting a Fionn McDonagh penalty with four minutes left, but Fergal Boland’s two-pointer would help to cement the impressive opening win for Mayo.
