Slaughtneil will play St John’s of Antrim in the Ulster club senior hurling championship final after the Derry champions saw off Portaferry by 1-23 to 1-18 at the Athletic Grounds.
In what a repeat of last year’s final in the northern province, Slaughtneil held a 0-8 to 0-6 advantage over their Down counterparts inside the opening 20 minutes before a Daithí Sands goal saw them falling behind.
Cahal Coleman’s point put three between the sides ahead of the holders surging in front before half-time (0-12 to 1-8) with the help of scores from Shane McGuigan, Shea Cassidy and Ruairí Ó Mianáin.
Cassidy and McGuigan would eventually put Slaughtneil up by three points in the closing quarter and, after Coleman pulled back two for Portaferry, Eamon Cassidy’s goal saw the would-be winners striking a huge blow in the 54th minute.
Ó Mianáin’s point after that made it 1-19 to 1-15 prior to Coleman (2) and Barry Trainor grabbing what proved consolation scores for the men from the Mourne County.
