Mungret St Paul’s claimed a first ever Limerick senior football championship title this afternoon by defeating Newcastle West on a 0-12 to 1-5 scoreline at Mick Neville Park.
Early scores from John Hutton (free) and county man Killian Ryan saw Mungret moving into an early 0-2 to 0-0 lead in Rathkeale, and while their opponents would level it up through the points of Iain Corbett and Eoin Hurley, the Saints shot over more scores via Darragh O'Sullivan (2) and Shane Barry to take in a 0-5 to 0-3 lead at the break.
Kevin O'Hagan's men kept their foot on the throttle after the change of ends, with an Oisin Moss point being backed up by a Brendan Giltenane effort from beyond the arc to stretch their advantage out to five.
The Magpies saw a few opportunities going by the wayside at the other end before they eventually registered the game’s only goal through Hurley, bringing them right back into contention as the game entered its home stretch.
A Hutton free settled some nerves for Mungret and a point from Diarmuid Hynes would have the scoreboard reading 0-10 to 1-3 with six minutes left on the clock.
The closing stages saw the sides swapping two points apiece, with Frank Corcoran grabbing what proved to be the insurance score for Mungret who made history with their victory here and now get set to face Kerry champions Dingle in the Munster club SFC semi-finals in two weeks’ time.
