Fermanagh champions Erne Gaels Belleek moved into the Ulster club senior football championship semi-finals thanks to an extra time victory over Cavan counterparts Kingscourt Stars this evening.
It finished 3-15 to 1-16 at Kingspan Breffni, where Declan Bonner’s men dug deep in extra time to earn the win after the home side had erased a 10-point half-time deficit to force the extra periods in Cavan Town.
The Gaels stunned the Stars by netting three goals inside the opening 20 minutes of this provincial quarter-final, with Odhran Johnston firing in their first in the ninth minute before Ultan Kelm and Jack McCann raised green flags that made it 3-2 to 0-1.
Johnston nailed a two-pointer for good measure five minutes before the break to help send the visitors in with a 3-4 to 0-3 advantage, but Kingscourt eventually got motoring in the second-half with the help of scores from Cian Shekleton and Jordan Morris prior to Cormac Yore netting their goal in the 48th minute.
Yore’s strike cut the difference down to six for Colin Kelly’s charges and a barrage of scores from Shekleton made it a two-point game as it ticked into injury-time time and Meath star Morris was able to come up with the score from beyond the arc which forced extra time.
Shekleton nudged Kingscourt ahead in the first minute, but two-pointers from Ultan and Oisin Kelm would see the Gaels regaining control and the scores of Seamus Ryder, Dan McCann and Shane Rooney (free) in the second period ensured that they got over the line in the end.
