Portarlington have too much for Old Leighlin in Leinster club SFC first round tie

Portarlington booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Leinster club senior football championship by seeing off Old Leighlin on a 1-12 to 0-6 scoreline at Netwatch Cullen Park this evening.

The Laois champions dominated for large portions of this provincial opener before Rioghan Murphy’s goal in the third minute of injury-time put the icing on the cake for them.

The sides had been level on 0-2 apiece 10 minutes in before Pat Roe’s men steamed ahead with scores from Jordan Fitzpatrick, Colm Murphy (free), Rioghan Murphy (free) and Ronan Coffey.

Paddy O’Sullivan with a fine effort for Portarlington and Old Leighlin really need something special to get back into this Leinster clash.

Mikey Bambrick stopped the rot with a point for the Carlow champions, but more scores via Fitzpatrick and Colm Murphy sent the visitors in with a 0-9 to 0-3 lead at the half.

The margin would be stretched to eight in the second-half ahead of Aaron Amond and Sean Taylor grabbing consolation points for Old Leighlin that were wiped out by Murphy’s goal at the death.

Next up for Portarlington now is a provincial quarter-final date with Louth champions Naomh Mairtin in Ardee tomorrow fortnight.
