Loughrea made it back-to-back Galway senior hurling championship titles this evening after edging out St Thomas’ by 1-15 to 1-14 at Pearse Stadium.
Both sides netted goal in injury-time in this decider in Salthill but it was Loughrea that held on to claim their club’s fourth county SHC success as they retained the coveted Tom Callinan Cup for the first time in their history.
The holders had got out to an early three-point lead thanks to the points of Anthony Burns (2) and Tiernan Killeen before moving towards a 0-11 to 0-6 advantage at the interval.
Burns, Vince Morgan and Killeen were all in fine shooting form during the first-half, while Conor Cooney hit 0-4 at the other end and the St Thomas marksman would land the first two-point of the second-half for his side.
Killeen and Darren Shaughnessy raised white flags at the other but St Thomas’ weren’t going away at any stage and two more from Cooney made it 0-15 to 0-13 coming towards the home stretch.
The trailers saw a few chances go by the wayside after that and were mad pay by Shaughnessy’s perfectly timed goal for Loughrea (watch it below), which would be cancelled out deep in injury-time by Cooney before Tommy Kelly’s men clinched the title by the minimum.
