Naomh Mairtin won their third Louth senior football championship crown in five years by seeing off county kingpins Newtown Blues (1-18 to 1-11) at the Integral GAA Grounds in Drogheda this afternoon.
All-Star nominee Sam Mulroy scored 1-4 for the winners, including a first-half penalty, as they avoided a third defeat in-a-row on this stage after having lost the last county two finals to St Mary’s Ardee.
Mattie Rice’s men held a 0-7 to 0-5 lead when they had Sean Healy brought down in the square by Alan O’Connor in the 21st minute and Mulroy slotted home the resultant penalty.
From there, the Monasterboice side moved towards a 1-11 to 0-6 interval lead, with Tom Gray kicking the first point of the second-half for the Blues.
The ball would be in the back of Naomh Mairtin’s net in the 38th minute thanks to Conor Mooney's neat finish off a Ciaran Downey pass.
A Mulroy ‘45’ and two-pointer from Darragh Dorian wiped out the goal though and the closing quarter of an hour in Drogheda would see the scores of Gray, Jack Murphy (two-pointer) and Eoghan Callaghan cementing the Joe Ward Cup for Naomh Mairtin.
